What to know before ordering

Description, fitment and specifications

The same 270 degree free-standing awning as the hard shell version, packed into a heavy-duty weather-resistant cover instead of a moulded case. It holds its own shape in calm conditions without support poles, uses 200gsm graphene-coated fabric with a waterproof treatment, and has LED lighting built into the support arms. Lighter on the roof than the hard shell.

Compatibility

This is not a vehicle specific part. VIKOR list it as roof rack compatible with a universal bracket mounting system, so it suits a ute, a wagon, a canopy rack or a trailer rack, provided the bars are spaced to take the brackets and the rack is rated for the load.

It does not mount directly to a roof without bars and it does not mount to a bare gutter. Check the load rating of your bars or rack before you order. If you are not certain the brackets suit what you have, send us a photo of your bars and we will check it.

Key features

  • 270 degree wrap-around coverage down the side and around the rear
  • Free-standing in calm conditions, so an ordinary setup needs no support poles
  • 200gsm technical fabric with a graphene coating
  • VIKOR state the coating blocks up to 99.5% of UV, which is what keeps the heat down underneath it
  • Waterproof treated fabric
  • LED lighting integrated into the support arms
  • Heavy-duty weather-resistant soft shell cover, lighter than the hard shell case
  • Rapid manual deployment

The trade is weight and money against convenience. A soft cover sits closer to the bars and costs you less in fuel and in roof load rating. The downside is that you have to zip a cover back over it, and if you pack it wet you will know about it later.

Frequently asked questions

Soft shell or hard shell?

The soft shell is lighter and costs less, so it takes less out of your roof load rating. The hard shell handles corrugations better and never needs a cover zipped back on. If the awning lives on the vehicle year round, spend the extra on the hard shell.

What happens if I pack it away wet?

The same thing that happens to any treated fabric packed wet. Get it out and dry within a day or two rather than leaving it zipped up for a fortnight. This is the practical downside of a soft cover against a moulded case.

What do I need to mount it?

Roof bars or a roof rack, plus the universal bracket mounting system to suit them. Check the load rating of your bars or rack first, because an awning is a permanent load carried high on the vehicle and it counts against your roof rating whether it is deployed or not.

Does it really stand on its own?

VIKOR rate it as free-standing in calm conditions, which covers most of what you would use it for. In wind, on uneven ground, or anywhere you would not want to trust the arms alone, put support poles under it.

What is it good for?

VIKOR list it for touring, camping, day trips, beach setups and overland travel. It is shade and rain cover down the side and around the rear of the vehicle, which is where you cook, work out of the boot and sit down at the end of the day.
